Ubernyms, for those not in the know!
What’s an ubernym? Well I could write all about this plugin and explain what it does, and everytime I mention the word I’d have to explain it. Or I could just write ubernyms. Now you can hover over the word and see a nifty javascript pop-up with the explanation in. This plugin is now available in your wordpress blog, you can find it under Settings > Ubernyms Config.
The plugin is designed for common words, acronyms, pseudonyms and the like which you use frequently in your blog. It’s mainly aimed at the techies who talk about php, css, ajax and w3c standards or like to show off about new “web 2.0″ techniques like rss, mashups and voip. However, whatever your knowledge or topic is on you can add any definitions under the settings panel mentioned above. So whether your talking about hermeneutics and the synod or Feba and the chrysolite you can create instant definitions, links or a glossary of terms. Once you’ve added a word, all you have to do is type it in your blog, the script will detect it and do the rest.
Each set of words is specific to each blog too so you won’t be interfering with other blogs by adding words, so feel free to make up your own dictionary and tailor it to anything you want. Just don’t be wylin.

The links are pretty hard to read, Sam, so it took a while to see that you had in fact swallowed a dictionary! I shall look foward to playing constructively with the plugin.
Sam, child pages created under top level parent pages do not show in the sidebar menu, and would be useful to me. They could appear below the parent, or if screen real-estate is a design issue, could they pop up when the parent link is moused over? I like the way this is heading.
I’ll look into child pages and menus.
Links above are hard to read as I started off on a white background when i installed and configured the plugin, but was just playing around on Friday with colours and themes. But had to head off before I resolved on a good combination. Will change it now.
1.20am Sam? Are you considering a top banner of somekind that will immediately identify each blog as an ‘official’ Feba blog? Personally, I like the idea of using personal names for blog owners, because it keeps the intent of blogging (personal opinion, own experience etc) directly connected to the individual. It also demonstrates to the blogosphere that Feba is serious about corporate blogging not being a sanitised extension of communications policies.
We may need to actively consider a hard-coded footnote along the lines of “the opinions expressed in this blog are not necessarily the official view of Feba Radio UK” - expressed in such a way that liability for content is upon the person and not Feba, yet encouraging freedom of expression and opinion.
It appears the clock has to be set on every blog to the correct time!!
Yes a more general header would be good.
I’ll get in touch with the “legal dept.” about the footer note. (If only!)
